ABOUT THIS POSITION

Australia’s southernmost municipal area, the Huon Valley Council, is looking for a customer service oriented and resilient Compliance Officer to join their Environment and Development Services Department. This role will foster adherence to statutory and legislative compliance requirements within the Huon Valley by educating and gaining cooperation from residents throughout the municipal area.

In this position, you will educate residents on compliance requirements in accordance with various pieces of legislation relating to, but not limited to, animal control, planning and development, and fire hazard abatement; this may also include the enforcement of these acts to obtain compliance. This position will be required to act as Municipal Pound Keeper and assist in animal control duties as necessary, as well as undertake inspections and conduct investigations into compliance matters as appropriate. This position will require the successful candidate to participate in an After Hours On-Call Roster.

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

Essential:

  • Completion of the relevant certificate or diploma-level qualification and/or relevant extensive practical experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with difficult and demanding/stressful situations involving members of the public.
  • The ability to use initiative and be adaptable in resolving problems and to escalate issues as appropriate.
  • The ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation, by-laws, regulations and procedures in a regulatory environment.
  • Aptitude, confidence and experience in dealing with a range of animals (predominantly livestock and dogs) in a variety of situations.
  • Strong literacy and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports and non-standard correspondence.
  • Proficient computer and keyboard skills utilising a range of systems and Microsoft applications.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Current class C unrestricted (manual) driver’s licence.

Desirable:

  • Practical exposure to the use of electronic records management and Geographic Information Systems.
  • Previous experience in a Local Government regulatory or compliance environment.
  • Fire Hazard certification.
