Weekly Ordinary Hours: 26-38 hours per week
Reports to: Environment & Conservation Manager
Pay Level: Level 3 (weekend work may be required) plus any entitlements as defined in the award related to your role).

Our Organisation 

Gympie and District Landcare Group (GDLG) is a community-based organisation that has been active for 30 years serving the local landowners. The Group is an incorporated association and a registered charity. Each year members elect an Executive (Management Committee) that sets strategic direction, manages organisation risks, fine-tunes policies and ensures that the organisation is operating effectively whilst staying true to its vision and purpose.

Members and volunteers are integrally involved in the group’s activities: operating a local native plant nursery; providing biological services raising insects for invasive plant species control and other purposes; providing land care services, fostering local land caring activities; and community education.

Purpose of Position

The purpose of this role is to take direction from the manager in relation to project outcomes and supervise the bush regeneration team in carrying out project works, including bushland regeneration, riparian restoration, invasive species control, and revegetation.

Person

The Environmental Conservation Team Supervisor should have a proven background in the supervision of teams, a practical working knowledge of good environmental outcomes, safety, a passion for customer service, and preferably with a practical working knowledge of regenerative land care practices.

This person would work closely with the manager to ensure project outcomes are achieved. This role will be responsible for supervising permanent and casual staff, including trainees. The successful candidate will ideally be reliable, passionate about caring for the land and customers, and be an enthusiastic selfstarter who is willing to work with our team to meet the financial, social, and environmental objectives of GDLG. This person will have initiative and be open to sharing their practical skills and experiences with a broad range of people.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Bushland and farm regeneration, watering, and maintenance.
  • Riparian restoration, revegetation, regeneration, and vegetation maintenance.
  • Weed maintenance including herbicide use.
  • Implement and oversee organisation on-ground WHS practices.
  • Ensure teams complete required documentation on a daily basis.
  • Supervise and develop staff to meet the operational needs of the department.
  • Training/coaching of bush regeneration team.
  • Equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Delegate responsibilities and tasks to the bush regeneration team.
  • Researching and interpreting on-ground information.
  • Stay abreast of all new and best practice in the field of land management and regeneration as it pertains to projects.
  • Ensure vehicles are fully equipped for each project on a daily basis.
  • Ensure proper end of day procedures are adhered to.
  • Effectively provide direction on project requirements to the bush regeneration team.
  • Monitoring of employee productivity and provide constructive feedback.
  • Attend initial project overview discussions with the manager.
  • Meet project deadlines as directed by the manager

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Cert 3 or diploma in Conservation & Land Management or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated Natural Resources Management (NRM) experience. 
  • On-ground supervisory, leadership and coaching skills. 
  • Chainsaw ticket or extensive experience handling chainsaws. 
  • Construction White Card. 
  • ACDC Licence. 
  • First Aid Licence (current). 
  • A working knowledge of regenerative land care practices. 
  • Experience in developing and implementing strategies. 
  • Excellent communication, writing and relationship-building skills. 
  • Problem-solving skills. 
  • Initiative. 
  • Passion for environmental conservation.

Desirable

  • Experience in working in community-based organisations.

Physical Demands

This position is a field-work position. At times, it may be physically demanding and requires a person who is fit, energetic, and flexible.

This role is a 26-38 hour per week opportunity with an hourly casual rate of $35-$38 per hour with the view to making the role full time as the organisation secures more work.
