Bush Heritage Australia is a leading conservation organisation dedicated to protecting ecosystems and wildlife across Australia. As a Field Officer (Ranger) based at Yourka Reserve, Einasleigh Uplands, you will work closely with the Reserve Manager to ensure effective day-to-day management in alignment with Reserve Management Plans and Bush Heritage goals.
Key responsibilities include:
- General rural and station maintenance, including fencing, water supply, road maintenance, steel and timber fabrication, operation, and maintenance of plant and equipment.
- Fire management activities such as planned burns and bushfire containment.
- Implementation of Reserve Management Plan programs, including fire, pest animal, weed and soil conservation.
- Infrastructure development and maintenance projects.
- Supervision of contractors and volunteers, including delivering volunteer inductions.
- Building collaborative relationships with neighbouring landholders, Traditional Owner communities, and other stakeholders.
- Routine patrols and inspections throughout the reserve.
- Participation in incident control, especially regarding fire management.
- Formal and informal training related to the role.
Selection criteria:
- Relevant land management or natural resource management experience.
- Physical fitness for required manual activities.
- Practical skills in mechanics, infrastructure, or plant and equipment maintenance.
- Experience in remote areas, and ability to work independently and in teams.
- Valid driver's licence with 4WD experience, first aid, rural chemical user ACDC, basic firefighting and chainsaw certificates.
The Yourka reserve is approximately 3 hours from Cairns on the southern Atherton Tablelands in a remote location, with accommodation provided for a single staff member. The role involves periods of isolation and outdoor manual work in varied conditions.
