Tiwi Plantations Pty Ltd is seeking a practical, hands-on and safety-focused Forest Protection Coordinator to lead our Forest Protection Crew on Melville Island in the Tiwi Islands. This role plays a key part in protecting and managing the Tiwi Island Plantation and Carbon Project, with a major focus on fire prevention, preparedness and response. You will coordinate day-to-day field operations, support fire management activities, promote safe and environmentally responsible work practices, and assist with sustainability programs including invasive weed control, acacia wildling management and environmental monitoring.

Working from the Yapilika Forestry Centre Camp, this is a field-based role suited to someone with strong leadership skills, good judgement, and experience working in forestry, land management, fire management, environmental operations, agriculture, conservation or a similar field.

About the role

Reporting to the Senior Manager Tiwi Islands Plantations and Carbon, you will be responsible for coordinating the Forest Protection Crew and supporting the safe and effective delivery of fire protection, field operations and environmental management activities.

• Coordinating fire prevention, preparedness and response activities.
• Supporting implementation of the Fire Management Plan.
• Coordinating fuel reduction works, firebreak maintenance and fire access preparation.
• Monitoring fire risk conditions and supporting fire season readiness.
• Coordinating crew involvement in planned burns, wildfire response and post-fire inspections.
• Ensuring firefighting equipment, vehicles, pumps, radios and other resources are checked and maintained.
• Coordinating daily work programs, tasks, equipment and resources for the Forest Protection Crew.
• Leading pre-start meetings, toolbox talks, risk assessments and field safety checks.
• Supporting training, mentoring and supervision of crew members, including local Tiwi employees.
• Assisting with invasive weed monitoring and control, acacia wildling management, environmental surveys and field inspections.
• Maintaining accurate records of fire activities, field works, treatments, inspections, incidents and environmental observations.
• Supporting compliance with health, safety, environmental, forestry and certification requirements.

About you

You will be a capable field leader who is comfortable working outdoors in remote, hot and physically demanding conditions. You will have a strong commitment to safety, environmental protection and respectful engagement with Traditional Owners, community members and employees from diverse backgrounds.

• A current valid driver's licence.
• 3+ years experience in forestry, land management, fire management, environmental operations, agriculture, conservation, natural resource management or a similar field.
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate field crews, daily work programs, equipment and resources in remote or field-based environments.
• A strong commitment to health, safety and environmental management.
• The ability to work safely around vehicles, machinery, fire equipment, chemicals and field tools.
• Good leadership, communication, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
• The ability to maintain accurate field records and complete basic reports.
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, or the ability to learn required company systems.

Desirable experience and qualifications

• NT Bushfires Awareness training or equivalent.
• First Aid Certificate.
• Chemical application accreditation.
• HR or MR licence.
• Experience in firefighting, planned burning, emergency response, weed control, pest management, revegetation, seed collection or environmental monitoring.
• Chainsaw, 4WD, machinery, GPS, mapping or field data collection experience.
• Experience working with Indigenous employees, Traditional Owners or remote communities.
• Previous experience on Melville Island, the Tiwi Islands or in tropical forestry environments.

The successful applicant will be expected to cross-skill and provide coverage across forest protection, fire, weed control, environmental monitoring and related field activities.
