About the NLC

We are responsible for assisting Aboriginal people in the Top End of the Northern Territory to acquire and manage their lands and seas. Our most important responsibility is to consult with traditional owners and other Aboriginal people to enable them to make informed decisions about all activities affecting their country. Our vision is to ensure that Aboriginal people benefit socially, culturally and economically from the secure possession of their land, waters and seas. 

About the Role

The Native Title Anthropologists will be responsible for coordinating and assist in the preparation of Land Council’s documentation and responses for new and ongoing Native Title Determination Applications (NTDA).  You will provide advice and assistance on anthropological matters in relation to the NLC’s native title practice including pre and post-determination NTA and future acts. The main responsibilities include:

  • Undertake with Anthropological research including desktop and field research into the Native Title Rights and interests of claimant groups within the NLC’s jurisdiction to ensure regional consistency and future-proof claims.
  • Prepare anthropological advice about Native Title Holders and potential Native Title Holders to support the NLC’s native title practice including pre-determination, post determination and future acts practice.
  • Coordinate and manage research work by anthropological staff and consultants into the Native Title rights and interests of Aboriginal groups within the NLC’s jurisdiction within required timeframes.
  • Review and Analyse connection reports prepared by consultant anthropologists and provide advice and feedback to the authors and relevant NLC staff. 
  • Prepare and monitor project budgets in liaison with relevant Native Title project staff, primarily the Native Title Claims Coordinator and the Native Title legal officer, to ensure compliance with relevant policies and procedures.

About You

To thrive in this role, you will have:

  • Significant demonstrated knowledge, understanding and respect of Indigenous Australian culture, customs and society including the current social issues and their impact on aboriginal people in the Northern Territory.
  • Minimum Honours degree in anthropology or related discipline; or demonstrable, applied experience in a similar industry/ context.
  • A good working knowledge or the ability to rapidly acquire of the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act 1976, Native Title Act 1993 and Northern Territory Sacred Sites Act 1989, in relation to the statutory functions of the NLC.
  • Excellent research, analytical and data sourcing skills with the ability to prepare high quality reports, correspondence and other submissions.

Remuneration and Benefits:

  • Permanent Contract
  • Location: Darwin
  • Salary: $82,186 to $101,668 per annum (pro rata for part time employees)
  • Allowances, e.g. district allowance and airfare allowances
  • FBT exempt salary packaging benefits pay
  • 13% superannuation contribution
  • 5 weeks annual leave (pro rata) & 17.5% annual leave loading
