The Role

This 1-year contract (0.8 FTE, extension subject to funding) will undertake research and analysis to strengthen understanding of environmental governance, regulatory systems, corporate activity, and supply chains, focusing particularly on the trade in timber from PNG and Solomon Islands. Reading/analysing Mandarin-language sources is essential. The Analyst will work in the Tropical Forest program, collaborating with the Program Director on illegal and unsustainable logging issues.

Key Responsibilities

• Research and analyse legislation, policies, governance, and supply chains related to forests in the Pacific and China
• Use Mandarin sources to inform research and translate/synthesise for English-language outputs
• Design and conduct research projects on environmental governance, illegal logging, and corporate/supply-chain issues
• Analyse data, corporate structures, trade flows, and identify opportunity areas for intervention
• Prepare research reports, policy briefings and translate findings into advocacy and campaigns
• Monitor political, regulatory, and market developments; contribute to strategy
• Work collaboratively with partners and stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region

Key Selection Criteria

• Tertiary qualification in a relevant field (public policy, environmental policy, international development, etc.)
• Independent research experience, strong analytical and data analysis skills
• Professional proficiency in Mandarin
• Strong organisational skills, project management, and communication skills

Desirable

• Research experience in timber, forestry, resource extraction, or supply chains, particularly in the Asia-Pacific
• Experience with vessel tracking, trade/maritime research, corporate analysis, or geospatial data
• Experience in environmental advocacy and/or working with Asia-Pacific partners
• Additional relevant languages
