Location: Sydney, Grafton, Port Macquarie or Coffs Harbour

  • Ability to work in both forest and office environments across NSW.
  • Contribute to ground-breaking NSW government environmental programs, including monitoring, mapping, research, technical and regulatory programs.
  • Ability to work closely with operations staff to provide expertise, support and improvements to the environmental regulations that apply to native forestry in NSW.

The EPA is an independent statutory authority which sits within the Department of Planning & Environment. Currently the Department of Planning and Environment is transitioning into a new Department of Planning and Industry which will take effect from 1 July 2019.

About the Role

The EPAs Forestry Branch is going through an exciting period of organisational and operational change. The Branch is responsible for setting environmental policy and regulations for native forestry in NSW to ensure that native forestry operations provide ongoing protection for threatened plants, animals, habitat, soils and waterways.

The role will contribute to:

  • the design and implementation of environmental monitoring, mapping, research and technology programs, including working with a range of other government agencies and independent experts;
  • providing expert support to changes to environmental regulations in NSW native forests, including advice on the necessary protections for native species, habitats, soils and waterways; and
  • providing technical support to operational teams to assist in regulation as well as policy development and advice for the Minister and the EPA and a range of cross government programs.

Primary purpose of the role

The Senior Ecologist provides technical advice and guidance for ecological assessments, environmental programs, research and monitoring programs, and contributes to the delivery of the EPA’s and NSW Government’s environmental programs, projects and partnerships across NSW.

Essential requirements

  • A degree in a relevant ecological or environmental science discipline, and/or demonstrated experience in survey and assessment of vegetation, flora and/or fauna.
  • A valid Australian driver’s licence and ability to travel.
  • Ability to carry out fieldwork in remote forested environments and manage 4WD recovery equipment. This is a physically demanding role requiring bending, climbing, walking and traversing through forested environments while carrying equipment in a small backpack. These environments are often densely forested and contain rough, precarious and steep terrain. A specific medical is required which includes task based physical assessments.
